Mary John, a woman who has given birth to triplets in Salima has asked well-wishers to help her look after the children as the family is poor.

Mary, who gave birth to underweight babies who were immediately put under Maikhanda Trust’s Kangaroo mother care at Mchoka Health Centre, said she cannot breast feed all the three children as required.

“I am unable to produce enough milk. If there can be any well-wisher to assist me with baby formula, I will be so thankful. The babies do not also have beddings and with this weather, it is becoming a challenge and I fear they may contract pneumonia,” she said while thanking Maikhanda for advising her to deliver at the hospital.

As we went to press, Mary and her husband had left their house to camp at their cassava garden to protect it from thieves.

Mary’s husband, in an interview, said they will be in the field for the next four months until they start selling the cassava.

“We rely on this cassava for our income and if stolen, we will suffer,” he said.

The Johns come from Mchoka Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Ndindi in Salima and they now have seven children.

Mary has previously given birth to two sets of twins.

  1. My advise to the family is that while I understand your finacial issues, it could be better if the family could change their staple food from cassava to maize otherwise this triplets issue would not go away, infact the problem might become worse over time. Every sensible Malawian knows how cassava increases ones libido to the point of madness if you are not careful.
