Motivation, engagement crucial in workplaces

Employers have been urged to engage and motivate their employees in their respective workplaces as this is key in the attainment of goals and objectives of the company.

Clinical psychologist Chiwoza Bandawe said this during a workshop on developing strategies for effective employee engagement organised by the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (Ecam) in Blantyre on Tuesday.

He said the implications of employee disengagement and lack of motivation are that employees would usually feel out of place, not participate in the companies’ activities and also lead to absconding work.

“It compromises the organisation activities; the ability to achieve their goals because people will be sabotaging, there will be absenteeism, and the profit margins of the organisation will be greatly compromised,” said Bandawe.

He further said companies or organisations that are able to provide some of the basic needs to their employees are in a better position to reach goals and objectives as employees will feel motivated.

On her part, Ecam communications and projects officer Ellen Ziwoya Phiri, said there is need for promotion of decent work as it is a tool of employee motivation on the other hand. n
