Moyale hunt for Chikoti Chirwa

Moyale Barracks FC have asked fellow Malawi Defence Force (MDF) outfit Red Lions to sign midfielder Chikoti Chirwa on loan following the relegation of the Zomba-based side from the TNM Super League.

In a request letter which the Mzuzu-based soldiers wrote Lions, dated December 10 2018, Moyale hope Chirwa will fill the gap of an experienced midfielder ahead of the league’s 2019 season.

Lions say he is going nowhere: Chirwa (R)

“With reference to the above, subject, we write to request your good office to consider loaning Chikoti Chirwa to our club,” reads part of the letter, which Moyale’s chairperson Major Clement Ngalonje signed.

“You may wish to know that our club has struggled a lot during the last Super League season due to lack of experienced players in key positions such as midfield and forward. We feel that this player will help fill the gap and help us prosper next season.”

However, Lions general secretary Lieutenant Dave Gondwe yesterday told Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) that they were yet to get official communication from Moyale.

“Of course, our general secretary has brought the issue to my attention by some colleagues after seeing the letter that is circulating on social media, but we have not received it,” he said.

Inspite of that, Chirwa said they are not releasing any player because they are already planning to return to the top-flight league after next season.
“So we cannot afford to release any of our key players,” he said.

Lions were on Saturday relegated from the elite league for the first time since inception in 1986 after going down 0-3 to eventual champions Nyasa Big Bullets at Balaka Stadium.

They settled for the 14th place on the 16-team log-table with 33 points, two points behind Moyale, who have finished 13th with 35 points.

Meanwhile, the number of military teams in the super league has dropped from four to two following the relegation of Lions and Salima-based Mafco FC.

Moyale now remain in the elite league alongside Lilongwe-based Kamuzu Barracks FC.

MDF spokesperson Major Paul Chiphwanya said they are concerned with the situation.
“We are hoping that our sports officers will meet to look into the issue,” he said.
