Mozambique optimistic of Malawi’s economic recovery

Mozambique has expressed optimism that Malawi can get out of its economic woes if it continues to work hard.

In an interview, Mozambican Foreign Affairs Minister Julio Baloyi said developments he saw in Lilongwe last week show that Malawi’s economic challenges can easily be solved.

“If Malawi continues to work hard, it can easily solve the economic challenges. I want to assure you that Mozambique will always be there to help Malawi.

“I also want to urge Malawi to take care of the new infrastructure built in Lilongwe because it can help the country to boost its tourism sector and bring in foreign exchange,” said Baloyi.

He said when Mozambique was going through similar economic challenges, it looked up to neighbouring countries that were doing well, including Malawi, to draw some lessons.

“What we learned from Malawi helped us to be where we are today. Since Malawi is going through economic turbulence, it should also learn from its neighbours who are doing well,” he said.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ephraim Mganda Chiume, said the fact that Mozambique and Malawi are chairperson and deputy of Sadc, respectively, it will help the two countries to deepen regional integration with ease.

 “This is a great honour and a huge task bestowed upon the two countries as we advance the Sadc agenda on poverty eradication and deepening regional integration amid a myriad of global challenges, including the continuing global economic downturn,” said Chiume.
