MP apologises to constituents for failure to consult

Kasungu North West member of Parliament (MP)   Bauden Mtonga has swallowed his pride and apologised to his constituents for not consulting them when going to Parliament.

The constituents took the MP to task at a National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) interface meeting on the roles of MPs and ward councillors at Mazi Trading Centre in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chulu this week.

The constituents said their MP does not consult them before going to Parliament despite pledging to do so.

“You [Mtonga] say you take our problems to Parliament, yet you have never consult us. Where do you get the issues you take to Parliament?” asked one constituent.

Mtonga responded by saying that some consultations take place before he goes to Parliament.

Said the MP: “I always consult before going to Parliament. I work with councillors and chiefs who tell me what issues to take to Parliament.”

However, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislator was asked why he only consults chiefs and councillors, ignoring the people who voted him to Parliament.

Mtonga acknowledged that he was in the wrong and offered an apology.

He said: “I apologise for not meeting you before I go to Parliament and I promise to consult you from now onwards.”

Nice holds interface meetings to remind the people on the roles of MPs and ward councillors.
