As one way of reducing maternal and neonatal deaths in the country, Nkhata Bay South-East  member of Parliament (MP) Noah Chimpeni has donated an ambulance to the constituency.

Speaking when he made the donation on Saturday, Chimpeni said he hopes the vehicle will ease transport challenges expectant mothers encounter when referred to Nkhata Bay District Hospital from Chintheche and Maula health centres in the constituency.

“The lack of a residential ambulance has led to many preventable deaths as it used to take long to transport patients to the district hospital. This donation is a fulfilment of the promise I made during the campaign in 2014,” he said.

Chintheche Health Centre officer-in-charge Greyson Kumwenda commended the MP, saying the donation will go a long way in reducing referral load the facility had been facing in the past.

The donation has come at a time when the district is championing safe motherhood programmes through a Mamaye campaign themed ‘Making Pregnancy a Safe Experience for Mothers, Babies and Everyone’. n
