MP proposes constituency offices

Listen to this article

Chitipa North Constituency Member of Parliament (MP Nick Masebo has asked government to consider establishing public offices in all constituencies in the country to ensure continuation of development projects.

Masebo said MPs are subjected to elections and when they lose their offices close and the new MP establishes a new political office which usually does not follow up and continue with the development projects of their predecessors.

Masebo said this in an interview with The Nation recently in Lilongwe during a panel discussion where different experts debated on issues of urbanisation.

“Many constituencies are not developing just because every development project seems to be political. This is so because the MP’s office is political in nature. There must be a public office which should be established by government through Parliament to ensure that development files are handed over to the new MP,” proposed Masebo.

He added: “For example, I belong to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and if I lose elections, it means the new MP will want to bring different projects which are in line with his or her party’s policies? We have been talking about taking Parliament to people; this is the right way of doing that.”

The panel discussion, which was organised by Urban Research Institute (URI) and was sponsored by Centre for Community Organisation, centred on the causes and effects of urbanisation in Malawi.
