Mystery surrounds the whereabouts of K1.83 billion meant for the construction of a new stadium in Kasungu.

In his contribution to the budget motion on Tuesday, Kasungu Central member of Parliament (MP) Amon Nkhata (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) said he is convinced that it was abused.Members_of_parliament

Said Nkhata: “A couple of years ago, Kasungu Municipality forwarded a proposal through the Urban Window application to KfW, a German donor, and it passed. The whole process was done, a letter of ‘no objection’ was granted and a contractor was identified.

“This is a straight forward audit query and I need answers from the ministries of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Local Government and Rural Development and Sports and Youth Development.”

In her response, Minister of Sports and Youth Development Grace Chiumia contradicted Nkhata’s assertions, insisting that the funds were not released.

She said: “I have been discussing this issue with honourable Nkhata for over a year now and I took the initiative to visit the site personally. What we discovered while there was that the money was not yet released because the district planning committee rejected the stadium plan.

“They, then, resubmitted the plan to government and the funds have not been disbursed. My ministry is responsible for stadiums and if the money was released I would have known.”
