Kasungu North legislator Mike Bango (Malawi Congress Party) has asked Malawi Police Service to deploy officers to Nkhakama Police Unit to enhance safety and security in the area.

The legislator made the call on Friday when he invited Central East Region Deputy Commissioner of Police Mlowoka Kayira to appreciate progress on the renovation works at the police formation.

Said Bango: “Nkhakama Police Unit has not been operating for four years after the building’s roof was blown off by a rainstorm in 2017.

“But now we have renovated the structure.”

The parliamentarian also said two staff houses were renovated.

Kaira commended Bango for taking a step to renovate the police unit.

“Let me pledge that soon the officers will be posted to the unit,” he said.

Sub Traditional Authority Chisikwa said he was pleased that officers would be deployed to Nkhakama Police Unit.

He said people were walking about 18 kilometres to Nkhamenya for police services.

“We are on the boundary between Malawi and Zambia where security is critical,” said Chisikwa.

The chief said community policing members will work with officers to ensure security in the area.

The project, which started in 2019, cost K1.5 million from the Constituency Development Fund.
