The Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBC) annual general meeting (AGM) held on Sunday resolved to put tough measures on the selection of boxing judges and referees.

MPBC general secretary Daud Chikwanje yesterday said the AGM, held at Crown Lodge, also resolved that promoters should apply for licences from the body and that all professional boxers should be licensed.

“Judges will only be those who have undergone formal training and from now onwards, boxers and managers will no longer be allowed to officiate bouts,” said Chikwanje.

The meeting also established several working sub-committees in addition to endorsing Lonzoe Zimba as chairperson, Ben Chitenje as vice-chairperson, Chikwanje general secretary, Gibson Chisale vice-general secretary and Abdul Kalisinje as treasurer. Committee members include Antonia Zilimbe, Jimmy Sawasawa, Happy Kumwenda and John Dalisechi.

They also set up a championship committee whose chairperson is Daston Nyamazi. Other members are Elton Mapira and Smith Mumba.

Adson Nkoka will chair the supervisory and ring committee assisted by Thoko Mvula as secretary whereas Frank Chibisa heads the marketing committee assisted by Charles Nyirenda. Rating, women, advisory, medical and legal committees were also set up.
