MPC seeks MOC’s help
The Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC), which is locked in a reimbursement dispute with its mother body, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), has turned to the Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) for guidance.
In a recent interview, MPC president Juma Mkandawire said MOC had the expertise to help MPC get their programmes up and running.
“Unofficially, they have promised to help us with our activities. Our objective is to come up with a strategic plan. We want MOC to help us with our programmes, including introducing sitting table tennis and sitting basketball,” Mkandawire said.
MOC and MPC are at par as national olympic committees. MOC reports to its mother body the International Olympic Committee (IOC) whereas MPC is under IPC which recently suspended Malawi’s membership for failing to reimburse over K2 million (about $5 128).
The money was meant for physically challenged athletes’ trip to London for last August’s Paralympic games.
MOC president Oscar Kanjala yesterday insisted that they could help MPC without compromising its relationship with IOC.
“We did discuss, but informally to see how we could support them. We do not know their plans. Perhaps the best way would be for them to call for a meeting with stakeholders. We do not know the communication they have with the IPC regarding their issues,” Kanjala said yesterday.
