Mpesi burial in Lunzu today

Burial of the late coach Dave Mpesi takes place today (Friday) in Mazaza Village, T/A Kapeni in Lunzu, Blantyre, Chikhwawa United FC announced on Friday.

Chikhwawa chairperson Owen Chomanika said the body was expected to be transferred from Mzuzu Central Hospital, where he died after a road accident in Rumphi, to Blantyre’s College of Medicine mortuary.

The deceased (57), with six children, was working for the Ministry of Works and was reportedly in a vehicle together with Malawi Revenue Authority officers, who survived the ordeal, when the accident occurred en-route to Mzuzu.

Meanwhile, there has been an outpouring of tributes for the departed coach who shot to instant fame with all-conquering Bata Bullets Youth in the late 1990s, grooming from scratch players such as Simeon Kapuza, Peter Mponda, Fischer Kondowe and Swadick Sanudi who later became household names with the Flames.

Mpesi also coached Blue Eagles, Civo United, Silver Strikers, Mighty Wanderers, Azam Tigers and Bullets. At the time of his death, he was coaching Chikhwawa United who are second in the Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League Premier Division.
