Mpico Soccer Trophy starts on August 29

Twelve teams have registered for the K1.7 million ($3704) Mpico Social Football Tournament which starts on August 29 2015 at Area 30 in Lilongwe.

According to coordinator of the tournament, Lawrence Yobe, more than 30 teams applied to participate in the first-ever sponsored social football tournament in Lilongwe.

“We had to reduce the number to 12 for easy management and also to make the tournament more competitive,” Yobe said last Wednesday during a draw conducted at Mpico Headquarters.

Teams that have registered include Bunda Alumina, Airtel, Black Rhino, Ecobank, Mpico, Malawi Savings Bank (MSB), Auction Holdings Limited, MRA, FMB, UNC Project, Limbe Leaf and Old Mutual.

Nearly all the registered teams witnessed the draw, which was done by Brenda Chioza from Mpico’s parent company Old Mutual.

The teams have been grouped in fours and top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals stage.

Winners will receive a trophy and K200 000 ($436); runners-up K150 000 ($327); third best K125 000 ($272)and the fourth-placed team K100 000 ($218).
