Mponda says Surestream not eyeing championship

Surestream Academy technical director Peter Mponda has said despite their Under-17 team impressive start in the Peter Mutharika SRFL First Division, their focus is not to win the league title.

Surestream currently top the third-tier Southern Region Football League (SRFL) Division One with six points having won both their games so far against Rays of Hope [2-0] and New Stars [6-0].

“We have made a very good start, but our focus is not to win the league, to the contrary, we just want to expose the boys to competitive football so as to prepare them mentally in the event that we send them for trials,” said Mponda.

The former Flames captain also displayed sheer modesty, brushing off suggestions that their good start is an indication that they could compete for honours.

“I do not see it that way because the league has just started and the teams that we have played against so far are fellow newcomers.

“So, it cannot be a proper yardstick to measure our strength until we face experienced teams such as Makoka Research, but having said that, I am proud of the team’s exploits so far and we’ll not sit on our laurels,” he said.
