History was made in the Chipiku Central Region Football League (CRFL) on Sunday when, for the first time ever, Dowa produced a Super League team.

Mponela United, formerly Adam FC, have finally won promotion into the Super League after years of trying when they drew 1-1 with Airborne Rangers

Airborne Rangers nearly stopped Mponela United’s promotion bid when the Salima-based soldiers equalised in the 61-minute after Mponela had gone ahead nine minutes into the game through captain Malumbo Phiri.

But Mponela held on to force a draw and progress despite tying on 82 points with fellow Dowa side Maicc FC. They go through courtesy of a superior aggregate.

Mponela coach Benjamin Kumwenda was all smiles after the match.

“We have been trying hard for many years to be promoted. We once finished as runners-up to Mafco, Epac and Kamuzu Barracks. Now we are there. I say thank you God for giving us this promotion. It has not been easy, but I guess we deserve it,” he said.

Kumwenda said he is confident that just like Epac, Kamuzu Barracks and Mafco, they too will survive in the top-flight league.
