Some legislators from the Central Region have commended the borehole rehabilitation project being implemented by Pacific Group in the region.

Speaking in a telephone interview yesterday, Nkhotakota North parliamentarian Henry Chimunthu Banda (independent) said the company has fixed 63 broken boreholes in his area in 23 days.

He said before the project, people in his constituency were fetching water from unsafe sources.

Said Chimunthu Banda: “The work done is invaluable as people in 63 communities will now access clean water.

“Besides, the availability of water will promote hygiene, especially during this when the country is fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.”

However, the former Speaker of Parliament appealed to Pacific Group to increase the number of teams repairing the boreholes.

“Currently, there are two teams. So, if they can increase the teams, they can repair more boreholes within days,” he said.

Another lawmaker, Halima Daud (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) of Dowa South East, commended the company for fixing boreholes in her area.

“Previously, women struggled to get clean water for their families,” she said.

Lilongwe Msozi South legislator Liana Kakhobwe Chapota (MCP) also thanked the project for repairing broken boreholes in her area.

In a separate interview yesterday, the borehole rehabilitation project team leader James Msusa said they are now repairing boreholes in Kasungu East Constituency.

“So far we have fixed 12 broken  boreholes. We expect to repair about 30 boreholes in this constituency before our next destination in Kasungu North North East Constituency,” he said.

Pacific Group has fixed about 3 100 boreholes in 60 constituencies in the country since 2015.
