MPS warns officers absconding work for beer

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has said it will deal with all officers who allegedly abscond duties to patronise drinking joints.

Reports indicate that some officers from Mulunguzi Police Unit in Blantyre allegedly patronize drinking joints while on duty, a situation that has forced people in the area to seek help from Chilomoni Police Sub-station.Beer drunkers

Speaking during a Community Policing Executive Forum meeting in Blantyre on Thursday, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Brenda Nkhoma said such officers destroy the reputation of MPS.

“This is unacceptable, these rotten apples are tarnishing the image of the whole police system, but we have come up with tough disciplinary measures and we will deal with them all,” warned Nkhoma.

Station Executive Committee Misheck Muntha said the meetings are held to make plans aimed at enhancing service delivery in the district. He added that members also review programmes being implemented.

During the meeting, members agreed to organize fundraising activities to source funds for constructing a building for Blantyre Police Station.

The station has been operating in the Department of Public Works’ buildings for over 14 years.
