Mpulula hopeful of passing Germany exams

Azam Tigers coach Leo Mpulula returned from a three-week coaching course in Germany on Friday, optimistic about making the grade for the Germany Football Association B Licence course held in Hennef.

He was among 30 participants, drawn from across the world, who received certificates of attendance at the end of the course while waiting for the results expected to be released within two months.

“From the way I performed in theory and especially practical sessions, I have no doubt that I have passed,” he said on Sunday about the course whose subjects included sports medicine, goalkeeping training and laws of the game.

The intensive course will see successful candidates receiving their certificates through their respective countries’ Germany embassies. Part of the course involved study visits to Bundesliga matches between Bayer Leverkusen against Hannover and Borusia Dortmund versus Freiburg.

“It was an eye-opener being drilled in systems. We learned that if it is 4-5-1, we have to look at the quality of a striker we have and the midfielders. If it is 4-4-2, then you need to have speedy wingers. We also learnt that players need to be handled depending on the levels of their development,” Mpulula said.

“It was one of the toughest course and the trainer [Las Isecki] emphasised that coaches have to be in full control of their squads’ selection. We also learnt that coaches have to be examplary on fitness. During the training, we had tough fitness regime one of our colleagues got injured and was still hospitalised when we were flying back.”

Mpulula follows the footsteps of other domestic trainers such as Frank ‘Franco’ Ndawa, Young Chimodzi and Patrick Mabedi who also attended the Germany course.
