Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association (WAM) has announced that winner of this year’s Mr. Malawi contest will pocket K200 000 (about $500).

WAM president Richard Kuwali said they decided to increase the prize of K75 000 (about $185) after getting support from the private sector.

“We have received some positive news from our partners and that is why we have increased the amount to K200 000 for the 2013 winner.

The runner-up will pocket K100 000 (about $2 500) while the third-placed winner will receive K50 000 (about $125). This has been done to motivate bodybuilders to take the competitions seriously,” Kuwali said in an interview with The Nation on Thursday.

He has warned that only serious contenders will be considered to participate in the national tournament to be held on October 26 at Cresta Crossroads Hotel.

Kuwali said the partners who have made it possible for the stakes to be increased have asked not to be mentioned.

“There will be a sifting process on October 16 to ensure that we have serious bodybuilders as we want to make the event more glamorous and attractive to the corporate world. I advise those wishing to take part to start camp now, but first they must register with the national coach Chimwemwe Bakali,” he said.

Reigning Mr. Malawi Henry Master said he has never stopped training even since being crowned in Blantyre last year.

“Bodybuilding is my favourite sport. I always work towards perfection. In my free time I always strive to be at the gym to perfect my moves and be ready for any competition,” said Master who has won the Mr. Malawi event for four consecutive years.

King Jussab from Parachute Battalion in Salima, who has for three years played second fiddle to Master said this time around, he is ready to turn the tables.
