Just a Coincidence

Mr. President, don’t try fix anything

Listen to this article

I read the refutal on Oswald Lutepo’s allegations against former president Joyce Banda by Peoples Party publicity secretary Kenneth Msonda with great interest because it was related to Cashgate.
It read: “Under the Malawi Constitution, we don’t comment on matters in court, but we are forced to comment to clarify on Lutepo’s unfounded allegations.” Now, I do not dispute that it may be problematic to be commenting on issues that are before the court, I was not sure that commenting on cases that are within the courts has ever been mentioned in the Constitution of Malawi. So I got my copy of the constitution, flipped through the pages to check. I failed to find which section of the constitution states that. Having failed to locate the statement in the constitution, I reasoned that may be I had a copy of the constitution before it was amended. Remember that our constitution has been amended several times. It is time I believe, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs publish the most recent copy of this important document, otherwise some of us will be using the wrong copy of this document.
Let us get the meat of the press release. It states that before Banda took over the reins of power from Bingu Mutharika, the country had suffered from significant forex shortage while she fixed this to have three months of import cover. The PP now alleges that all those gains had been wiped away. The press statement went on to say that the Malawi Kwacha was ‘diving’ and falling badly, but Banda fixed this problem. Further, there was chronic fuel shortage which she fixed.
There was mention of political tension such as riots, civil disobedience and violence, tensions and killings of people in the cities of Mzuzu, Blantyre and Lilongwe during Bingu’s time. Electricity blackouts, scarcity of water in towns and price of commodities had been high during the Bingu time. Yet, Banda fixed all of this. Other things mentioned are media freedom improvement and the relationship with development partners, donors and neighbouring countries.
So if one reads the press release one gets the sense that JB fixed many things that had gone awry during Bingu’s time. This is where I conclude: If you fix things in this country, they vote you out of power. So, Peter Mutharika watch out. Don’t fix anything, lest we vote you out as we did Banda.
