Lately, local sugar manufacturer Illovo Sugar (Malawi) Limited has been complaining about the influx of imported sugar on the market, a development its managing director Ray de Allende said is hurting the company and is a threat to consumers’ lives.

He said: “We are currently faced with a situation where imported sugaris dominating the domestic market and killing our market. This is especially because these sugars are cheap, but the risk is on whether it is fortified.”

In a move to arrest the problem, MRA has appealed to the public to inform its agents or security officials if anybody is suspected to be smuggling or stocking smuggled sugar.
