The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) on Saturday got a timely gift ahead of the Army Sports Day which starts today when they got a donation of 50 balls worthy K250 000 (about $1 000) from MS Trading.

The donation took place at Army Headquarters in Lilongwe and was received by MDF deputy commander Lieutenant General Clement Kafuwa.

Kafuwa thanked MS Trading managing director Rafik Sajee for the donation.

He said as a military service organisation, MDF emphasises sports.

“For us to do well in various sports disciplines we need such organisations like MS Trading. We are faced with many challenges. This donation is also timely because it will help us in the MDF annual sports festival next week (today),” he said.

“As former football player for Red Lions, I know that for sportsmen to succeed, they need to access good and adequate sports facilities and equipment such as uniform, boots and balls,” he said.

Kafuwa said the football and netball balls will be distributed to all the Army units in the country so that everyone benefits from the donation.

MS Trading sales manager Noel Tembo who spoke on behalf of Sajee, said through the donation, they are complementing government efforts to develop sports in the country.

“We know MDF has teams in the Super League and it is our belief that this donation will help you in covering some of the challenges you are facing,” said Tembo.

The function was graced by several senior military officials including the directorate of training (DOT) Brigadier MacBeth General Mkandawire who is responsible for army teams in MDF.
