Msakakuona appointed U-17 coach

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has appointed Blue Eagles coach Derklerk Msakakuona as Under-17 head coach which is expected to take part in the Cosafa Under-17 Youth Championship to be held in Mauritius from July 22 to 31.

According to the press release issued on Monday, the team is expected to start camp training this Sunday at Mpira Village in Blantyre.

Msakakuona will be assisted by Tione Mhone. Both Msakakuona and his assistant are holders of CAF A coaching license.

FAM has also entrusted Mike Banda from Kamuzu Academy with the position of team manager while Heathwin Nkumbaleza is the goalkeeper’s trainer.

Meanwhile, FAM is calling on interested Under-17 players to attend trials to be conducted this week in all the regions on July 6 and 7.

“FAM is calling all talented U- 17 players to attend trials all players eligible to participate in the trials. They must be born on or after January 1 2000.

“The players will undergo intensive age screening before the trials and are requested to bring personal identifications like passports, birth certificates and a school identification card [ID] which must be attached with a letter from their school signed by the head teacher,” reads part of the press release.

In the South, the trials will be held at Mpira Stadium and at Zomba Community Centre ground whereas in the Centre, they will be held at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe. In the North, the exercise will be conducted at Mzuzu Stadium.

The Junior Flames have been drawn against Zambia, Madagascar and Mozambique in Group B. Group A comprises the hosts, South Africa, Namibia and Seychelles.
