Malawi Savings Bank (MSB) on Thursday donated K3.8 million (about $9 500) to Help Malawi, towards the construction of school blocks at Nanthomba Primary School in Balaka District.

Presenting the cheque, MSB deputy chief executive officer Kayisi Sadala encouraged the community to send their children to school because that was the only way they would develop.

“We found it important to support the Help Malawi initiative because our bank believes that the future of this nation depends on education. The support that we have provided is for the construction of school blocks because some students are learning in grass thatched classrooms at this school,” said Sadala.

Speaking in an interview after the presentation of the cheque, Help Malawi country director Wells Sakala thanked MSB for the donation and asked other companies to do the same.

“We must encourage students to go to school. The donation is a contribution towards the construction of three school blocks which can cost up to K10 million each. We are writing proposals to raise that amount so that our students learn in a better environment,” said Sakala.

The school blocks and teachers’ houses at Nanthomba Primary School were built by Help Malawi. Help Malawi in conjunction with the Ministry of Education assists the school and three other schools at Kavunguti, Kafulafula, and Mlambe with teacher aides. Help Malawi also provides teachers with stipends and training.
