Msiska eyes two Golden Boot awards

After missing an opportunity to score during Malawi’s recent African Women Football Championship matches against Zambia, midfielder Sungeni Msiska has shifted her focus on domestic scene where she eyes two Golden Boot awards this weekend.

Msiska plays for Matindi Girls Academy in the Matindi Academy Schools Women Football Tournament where she finished the first round as the top scorer, with 12 goals.

With 14 goals apiece, Msiska and teammate Monica Chapweteka, are second top-scorers in the Arthur Peter Mutharika Southern Region League where she [Msiska] plays for Blantyre Zero.

Both Matindi Girls Academy and Blantyre Zero will play their first second-round games in the two competitions at the weekend and Msiska wants to use the fixtures to increases her tally in search of the awards.

On Saturday, Matindi date Dreams United in the Mutharika League at Escom ground whereas on Sunday, they will meet St Kizito CDSS at Chiwembe ground in the school tournament’s round-of-16.

“It is just unfortunate that I failed to score against Zambia. But I do not want to miss out the opportunity of clinching the two Golden Boot awards. Of course, it will be a daunting task, but I am determined to achieve it,” said the 18-year-old.

In the Mutharika League, Msiska is three goals behind top-scorer, Evirom striker Towera Vinkhumbo, whose side will meet Sitima Yoce Sisters at Chiwembe on Saturday. At the same venue, league leaders Zomba City Queens will tussle against Ntopwa Super Queens whereas Topik Super Queens will face ATU Ladies.

According to Southern Region Women Football Committee (SRWFC) general secretary, Patricia Damalekani, the Matindi Academy tournament, St Mary’s will play St Louis CDSS at Balaka Stadium on Saturday whereas Mulanje Secondary School will host Kalibu Academy at Mulanje Community Centre ground.

“On Sunday, Namalimwe CDSS will meet Njedza CDSS at Thyolo Community Centre ground. Bakhita will be up against Poly Ladies at Balaka Stadium where St Charles CDSS will also face Police Secondary School. Sadzi will take on Ndirande Institute at Zomba Community Centre ground as Stella Maris face Ndirande CDSS at Chiwembe,” she said.
