Msiska to represent Malawi at Africa Jnr Tennis Championship

Mzuzu-based Linda Msiska will represent Malawi at this year’s Africa Junior Tennis Championship to be staged in Pretoria, South Africa from March 9 to 18.

The Under-14 tennis starlet is the only junior Malawi selected for the continental competition ,having impressed at the ITF/CAT Southern Africa Junior Championships in the same country recently.

“The determination for qualification was top-eight finish and Linda achieved just that.

“She is currently undergoing special training at Mzuzu Golf Club in preparation for the tournament. Our plan is that she should fly on March 6 so that she should have ample time to acclimatise,” said Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (Ltam) president Titani Muwalo on Monday.

On her part, Msiska said she was excited at the prospect of competing with fellow top junior tennis players.

“I will work extra hard so that I can follow Lumeta’s footsteps. In future, I want to play in big tournaments like Serena Williams,” she said

The tournament provides a platform for up-and-coming tennis players to earn scholarship to study at the High Performance Centre in Morocco.

United States of America (USA)-based Malawian tennis gem Chisomo Lumeta rose to stardom when he dominated in the same tournaments. n
