Mtalimanja Sugar Corporation suspends production

Mtalimanja Sugar Corporation, a wholly-Malawian owned mini sugar factory which started its operations on August 1 2012, has temporarily closed due to some technical challenges.

Owner of the newly-built factory, Napoleon Dzombe, in an interview last week said the firm started operations on August 1, but has been forced to halt production to satisfy some international requirements.

“We need to work on a few more things to align ourselves with international standards. Some of these things have to do with the health and safety of our workers.

“We have bought some working suits. At the moment, we are doing some final touches on the changing room. We should be done in a few days’ time. Otherwise, we are set to resume production,” said Dzombe.

He said they were forced to start production because engineers who were installing the machines want to go back to India.

“But that is not a cause for concern because our workers know how to run the machines,” he said.

Mtalimanja Sugar Corporation will be producing 10 tonnes of sugar per day.

Dzombe said the factory is mainly for producing sugar for local consumption.
