The Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) recently donated teaching and learning materials to Nazombe Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nazombe in Phalombe.

The materials, worth K5.5 million (US$13 715), were sourced with financial support from a Norwegian organisation, Operations Day Work.

They included Perkins braille machines, braille papers, hand frames, notebooks and printing papers.

MUB Inclusive Education coordinator Stuart Chauluka said his organisation wants to help learners with special needs to access quality education and enhance their participation as well as performance in class.

Chauluka said government is facing serious challenges to improve inclusive education because of lack of essential facilities in public schools.

He said it is imperative that all learners, regardless of their disabilities, should benefit from quality education for Malawi to achieve meaningful socioeconomic development.

“However, MUB is aware that government is grappling with a number of problems in this area such as lack of special needs education teachers and teaching and learning materials. We are raising resources for distribution in public schools to ease the pressure government has in providing inclusive education in the country,” said Chauluka.

Specialist teacher at Nazombe Primary School Matthews Kavyale said the donated items will seal a gap the school had in its special needs section.
