Senior Chief Chikumbu of Mulanje has commended community policing structures in the district for responding timely to security matters.
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting between police and community stakeholders, the chief said community policing structures are reliable in fighting crime.
“Crime has now decreased in my area due to the rapid response of community policing members,” said Chikumbu.
She commended community policing members for their commitment, saying traditional leaders are willing to work with them to ensure public safety and security in the district.
“Security is important for any form of development because without it businesses and other activities are affected,” said Chikumbu.
In his remarks, Mulanje Police Station officer-in-charge Edwin Magalasi thanked traditional leaders for their encouragement.
He said police work better when there is community support.
“I am pleased that as leaders, you are willing to work with police. Community participation is crucial in security because security starts with the community itself,” he said.
