The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) on Friday launched a peace committee in Mulanje as a way of implementing a Peace Policy launched last year.

Principal Secretary in the OPC responsible for administration Cliff Chiunda said although Malawi is not experiencing war, there is need to promote peaceful co-existence and peaceful conflict resolution.

“These committees assist in settling disputes in our communities using violent-free measures which include dialogue and mediation,” he said.

National Peace Architecture chairperson Apostle Madalitso Mbewe said such committees are crucial, particularly now that the country is moving towards the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections.

“Our acts, speeches and reasoning should always strive to safeguard and promote peace,” he said.

Mulanje district commissioner Charles Makanga highlighted some of the common disputes in the district, including land wrangles and witchcraft allegations.

Mulanje District Council chairperson Isaac Blazio expressed optimism that the committees will eliminate mob justice and other related acts.

The theme for the launch was Promoting The Right to Peace Through District Peace Committees.

Similar committees have been established in Salima, Nkhata Bay, Mangochi, Kasungu and Karonga.
