National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust in Mulanje has launched the governance project aimed at promoting citizen participation in public life, local governance, increased transparency and accountability.
Speaking when he launched the project in Mulanje on Friday, Nice district civic education officer TwambilireMwabungulu said the project will contribute to the reduction of poverty as there will be openness and accountability in implementation.
“People at community level will take a leading role in decision making when it comes to projects and other issues of governance. Corruption happens when decisions are carried out at the top,” he said.
Mulanje District Council chief planning and development officer Humphrey Gondwe welcomed the project.
However, he called for proper planning so that it is not used to frustrate government programmes.
