The Mulhako wa Alhomwe, an ethnic grouping founded by the late president Bingu wa Mutharika, has pledged to work with President Joyce Banda in her development agenda in Malawi.

The grouping’s outreach coordinator Leston Mulli made the pledge during a news conference held in Lilongwe on Sunday. He said despite the new President not being from their own tribe, as a national grouping they are ready to support her.

“Mulhako wa Alhomwe is in Malawi and there is no way the cultural group can work without supporting the incumbent President. Government is for everyone and despite the current situation as a cultural group with the interest of the Lhomwe, Mulhako will still be there,” said Mulli.

The late Mutharika was the patron of  Mulhako wa Alhomwe, an ethnic grouping whose membership is mostly tribal groups from the districts of Thyolo, where the president came from; Mulanje, Chiradzulu, and Phalombe. Banda, on the other hand, comes from Zomba district.

Mulli, one of the renowned businesspersons in the country and managing director of Mulli Brothers Group of Companies, also pledged his company’s support to Banda’s government development agenda.

He dismissed suspicions that the pledge resulted from fear and an attempt to protect the company’s business interests.
