Murder cases register 55% increase in Ntcheu

Records at Ntcheu Police Station show that the district has registered 11 murder cases between January and June this year compared to six registered during the corresponding period in 2018.

The increase represents 55 percent.

The records also show that 41 people have died in 30 road accidents recorded during the period this year while 2018 records show 43 deaths from 50 road accidents.

Criminal cases have dropped from 653 in 2018 to 651 in 2019 just like sexual assault-related cases which were at 24 in 2018 but have dropped to 15 this year.

Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said the station is addressing the situation.

“From the records, you can see that we have made progress in some areas although the situation has worsened in others. We have come up with modalities to contain the situation,” he said.

Chigalu said some of the interventions are introduction of mobile police units in busy trading centres and increasing traffic patrols on M1 and M5 roads.

He said police have intensified sensitisation campaigns on crime and introduced rural patrols to increase their visibility.

In his 2018 end-of-year message, Inspector General of Police Rodney Jose said crime rate can reduce significantly if the public works with the police.

He acknowledged that a lot of successes registered in 2018 were a result of community involvement through community policing structures.
