Murder, suicide claim three in Salima

A somber mood engulfed Mwazawala Village in  Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalonga in Salima District on Friday following the sudden death of three members of the same family on Thursday night over a suspected family wrangle.

Confirming the incident, Salima Police Station spokesperson Jacob Khembo said two of the deceased persons—a mother and a daughter— were suspected to have been murdered by the husband before he hanged himself.

Confirmed the deaths: Khembo

He said the husband allegedly cut the throats of the two with a sharp object suspected to be a knife.

“We took their bodies to Salima District Hospital where a post-mortem was conducted on Friday morning. The post-mortem established that the mother and daughter died due to excessive loss of blood due to the cuts on their throats while the man died of suffocation,” said Khembo.

In his remarks, T/A Kalonga said he was shocked by the sudden death of the three family members, saying the deaths were avoidable.

“Such family wrangles can be dealt with through many avenues, involving marriage counsellors is one of them,” he said.

Meanwhile, police in Salima have launched an investigation into the deaths.

The bodies were buried on Friday at the village cemetery.
