Kasungu Municipality residents have expressed concern over cloudy and smelly water being supplied by Central Region Water Board (CRWB).

Jean Ndhlovu, a resident of Kasankha, said the water is giving her second thoughts as it appears to be contaminated.

“The water is muddy and producing a bad smell. I am really sceptical about using this kind of water, especially for drinking and washing fruits,” said Ndhlovu.

During a recent urban executive committee meeting, members also strongly expressed concern about the water quality.

One of the members, Olive Panyanja said she fears the water may cause some diseases in the short and long-term.

“For two weeks, we have been using dirty and smelly water which can cause an outbreak of waterborne diseases. Something really has to be done about this,” she said.

Kasungu Civil Society Network (KUCSNET) has also expressed dissatisfaction with CRWB, saying people are being given a raw deal.

KUCSNET chairperson Limited Mwango said the water CRWB is producing is not safe.

“People pay for the water that they use and this should not be the kind of water that should come out of the taps. This is really a letdown,” said Mwango.

He requested CRWB to consider supplying water using water bowsers.

Kasungu CRWB and senior zone manager Moses Kalenga has blamed the situation on the encroachment in the Kasungu Dam catchment area. He has assured residents that the problem is being looked into. n
