Muslims, Chewas resolve differences

Group Village Head Nkazomba of Mitundu in Traditional Authority Chiseka says peace has returned to the area after Muslims and Chewas nearly fought over Gulewamkulu.

Nkazomba said this at his village in Mitundu on Thursday.

“We are now living in harmony. They stepped on our tradition, they insulted us and said our Nyau culture was useless, but they apologised and we forgave them,” said Nkazomba.

He said Muslims in the area are not Chewa and as such they should learn to respect the indigenous people in the area.

“I don’t think what happened will happen again because all of us have learnt from the recent events,” said Nkazomba.

Tensions and tempers ran high in Mitundu following the alleged kidnapping of a Muslim child by members of the Nyau cult which angered Muslims who burnt and desecrated Nyau sites.

The Muslims were ordered to leave Mitundu and it took high level intervention to pacify the parties, but the Muslims had to pay money equivalent to a cow.
