Muslims throughout the world will today observe Qrubaan (the slaughtering animals) in honour of God.

Animal slaughtering is a concept taken from the Holy Quran when Abraham was commanded by God to kill his son Ishmael as sacrifice.

Islamic Relief Agency (IRA) chairperson Sheikh Abdul Razzaq Fattani said the sacrificing of animals is done after Eid.

“Sacrifice of animals is part of Eid celebrations. At 80, Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice his six-year-old son. In obedience, Abraham went to a place called Minah in Saud Arabia,” he said.

He said God’s instruction was to test Abraham’s faith and he ended up slaughtering a sheep in place of his son at God’s further command.

Fattani said before slaughtering the animals, Muslims pray for peace, unity, and prosperity. He added that they will ask God to spare the country from the Ebola outbreak and provide Malawi with good rains.

He said after slaughtering of animals— that will include; cows, goats and sheep—Muslims will distribute the meat among themselves and non-Muslims.

According to Fattani, IRA has made arrangements to distribute meat to Blantyre rural areas where the agency operates.
