The Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) covering a wide range of socio-economic activities to benefit the two institutions and Malawians.

Malata (L) and Nundwe sign the MoU

In the MoU, the two institutions will work together in areas of research, security, science and technology.

Speaking when he signed the MoU at Must campus in Thyolo on Thursday, MDF Deputy Commander Lieutenant Vincent Nundwe said the institution was delighted to partner with Must in building the capacity of its staff.

In the five-year agreement, which will mainly involve exchange of staff and personnel between the two institutions, Must will provide academic space to MDF staff and collaborate in research while MDF will provide space for internship and readily available security expertise and allow the university to access some of MDF facilities for its teaching and learning.

Said Nundwe: “We looked at the programmes at Must and we thought it is the best in as far as our progression is concerned. Technology is key to the progression of any institution and for us to accomplish our mission, we need technology. We also need to upgrade our staff so that they are able to operate on the equipment we have.”

On her part, Must vice-chancellor Professor Address Malata said the institution plans to open a centre for strategic studies which will be essential to the capacity development of MDF staff.

“This is very important for the growth of the university because our vision is to become a world-class centre for science, technology innovation and entrepreneurship. For us to achieve this, we need strategic partners and we have seen over the months different institutions both public and private wanting to partner with us.

“MDF is interested in cyber security, our music and other strategic issues that they need which are technological in nature,” said Malata.
To ensure implementation of the MOU, the two institutions plan to institute an advisory board to do monitoring and evaluation.
