Malawi Human Rights Youth Network has applauded newly-elected President Peter Mutharika on his decision to introduce community colleges as one way of empowering the youth so that they create their own wealth.

In his inaugural speech on Monday, Mutharika said the community colleges will provide entrepreneurship education to create “a new middle class, which has been missing since Malawi got independence 50 years ago”.

Mutharika (L) won the election on May 20.

The network’s executive director, Kingdom Kwapata, told The Nation that DPP’s plans have come at a right time when most youths in the country lack vocational skills to pursue different businesses.

“This plan is very welcome. We have been waiting for such ideas so that youths should have vocational skills. Through this way, youths will be able to start their own businesses,” said Kwapata.

He, however, said Mutharika’s government should ensure the vocational skills to be offered meet the current demands of the market.

“Government should do research before implementing this plan. They should find out skills that are on high demand in the country’s industries,” said Kwapata.
