Barely three days after throwing a hint about the attributes of the candidate, Malawi President Peter Mutharika has appointed First Merchant Bank (FMB) General Manager for Finance, Planning and Strategy, Lucas Kondowe, as the new Director General of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB).

Chief Secretary to Government, George Mkondiwa, confirmed the development with Nation Online in an interview saying Mutharika made the appointment today.

“It true what you have heard. Mr Lucas Kondowe has been appointed to that position and the appointment has been made today,” he said.

In a separate interview Kondowe said he was humbled by the president’s confidence to invite him to participate in the task of “making Malawi a better place.”

“One can only repay such confidence by working hard and with diligence to make a positive difference that the country needs. Together, by pooling all our talents and energies, we can make Malawi a better place,” he said.

Kondowe promised to lead an ACB that does not keep scared cows or get used to victimise people, saying President Mutharika had assured him that there will be no interference from the administration.

“People must be taken in or left free only based on facts and the law,” he said.

Kondowe’s appointment is subject to the approval of the Public Appointment’s Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly.

  1. Good choice, I understand the fake barrister chief mourner was also eyeing for the position. He would have destroyed the reputation of Prof Peter.

  2. This is the only appointment in govt that this old man has made that makes sense to many Malawians and one that could be claimed to have been based on merit.
Thanks to all sensible Malawians who have been making lots of noise about the nepotism tendencies so far shown by the current tenant at state house. He has chickened out to choose another Mulahko bootlicker to head the ACB, in fact if he had done that it would have been political suicide on his part.
I personally can’t see any reason why the Public Appointments Committee would turn down this appointment.

    1. is it merit when a northerner is appointed? Why do you think that the only desrving people are from te north? This mentality is detsroying our country. You are making all us people who have been more Malawian to start questioning the motives of the northern tribes

    2. To you “Mbonga Matoga” appointing someone from other tribes rather than a tumbuka its nepotism, am becoming to wonder with some sentiments from some disgruntled northern friends. Is it a must that when the president wants to make an appointment into any big position, first should be a tumbuka or a northerner? Am not a fun of this ruling party at all but its becoming so surprising with your motives guys!!

      1. To be honest, I didn’t know this particular Kondowe is from the north, thanks for letting me know. I personally don’t use names to jump to conclusions on other peoples’ home of origin becoz for instance in this case there are Kondowes in all three regions of Malawi becoz of intermarriages.

  3. He will be paid by the Indians in foreign banks and no change will be made, as usual !
