Addressing the new officers, Mutharika asked the officers to continue upholding the MDF core values of selfless commitment, respect for others, loyalty, integrity, discipline and courage.

“You have persevered and triumphed and now you are officers. Obey orders and stay committed. MDF is renowned for its professionalism world over when charging its duties. Now that you are part of this institution, I urge you to exercise integrity,” advised the President.

He assured MDF Commander General Ignacio Maulana of government’s support to empowering MDF to be a strong force to protect the territory.

The new officers swore an oath of allegiance to MDF and the nation which was administered by MDF lawyer captain Gilbert Mitawa.

Speaking earlier, Maulana said the new officers underwent a very intense and demanding training which is aimed at developing commanders of courage and willpower, with the temperament for decisive action in difficult and dangerous circumstances.

“Completion of this course which fosters attitudes of integrity, selflessness and loyalty is a personal achievement for each of these officers. Now they have authority to lead soldiers and I am privileged to welcome you to MDF, “ he said.

Maulana said the course taught the officers how to think and communicate as commanders and to foster a deep interest and care for the individual.

“I advise you to foster good relationship and trust with your soldiers and at the same time obey your commanders. Leadership is about trust, “he advised the new officers.

Second lieutenant Kennedy Nkhani emerged the best officer of the 45 officers and Mutharika honoured him with a sword.

Nkhani said he was happy to have completed the course and he felt privileged to serve in the army as an officer. n
