President Peter Mutharika is today expected to officially open this year’s Malawi International Trade Fair which is themed Productivity: A key to exploiting opportunities.

In a telephone interview on Thursday, Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) chief executive officer Chancellor Kaferapanjira confirmed that President Peter Mutharika will officially open the fair today (Friday).

According to the chamber, the fair will run up to June 29 and is aimed at providing a platform for local and international participants to showcase their exhibitions and network with patrons and other participants.

Speaking during the State of the Nation Address on Tuesday Mutharika said the new government recognises the important role the private sector plays as an engine for economic growth and a source of direct revenue and employment.

And in an e-mail on Thursday, Ministry of Industry and Trade—a line ministry on trade and private sector development—spokesperson Wiskes Nkombezi said they have assisted small and medium enterprises and cooperatives to showcase their products at the fair.

“Malawi needs more entrepreneurs and the fair is one of the opportunities where the culture and spirit of entrepreneurship can be enhanced and nurtured,” said Nkombezi.

Prospective exhibitors during interviews this week, ahead of the fair said they were geared for the international fair.

Universal Industries administration manager Alex Chisiano said their company is geared for the event and will ensure it provides the best and competitive products as challenged by the chamber.

“We will take this chance to showcase some of our new products to the patrons. We have arranged sampling tables which will be open to interested people to taste some of our new products,” he said.

A Kenyan based art entrepreneur Ireen Maina says she is looking forward to create business networks from the fair.

“I have heard about the fair from my friend and hoping to make more sales and create business partnerships, “she said.
