MW women’s team up on rankings
Malawi women national football team has moved a step up to 133 from 133 in the quarterly Fifa/Coca-cola women’s world ranking despite continued inactivity.
Malawi, who last beat Zambia 3-1 in January at Kamuzu Stadium in an African Championship match, are eighth in Cosafa and 21 in Africa. Nigeria are the continental leaders.
According to a March 16 update on Fifa website, South Africa are the southern Africa leaders, fourth on the continent and 65th out of the world’s 135 ranked teams.
Zimbabwe are second in Cosafa, 12th on the continent and 102 in the world.
Up the global rankings, the United States, Germany, reigning World Champions Japan, Brazil and Sweden make up the top five respectively.
“The biggest move in terms of ranks and points, however, belongs to Cameroon (52nd, up 9), who have benefited from a decision to award them a retrospective victory over Equatorial Guinea for the games played on April 2 and 17 2011,” reads www.fifa.com.
The team returned to action recently, but bowed out despite a 4-2 beating of Zambia who had done enough to win 5-0 in Lusaka in the first leg of the African qualifying race.
The rankings reflect largely 111 matches played since the last edition of the ranking.
