Tough luck: Mwakasope being given first aid

Mzuzu-based boxer Felix Mwamaso, 22, proved his worth as a professional boxer on Sunday when he defeated his Tanzanian opponent Lewis Mwakasope on technical knockout at Obrigado Leisure Park in Mzuzu.

The non-title bout was set to last eight rounds, but a hard punch by Mwamaso in the fourth-round left the Tanzanian battered clean with a deep cut near the left eye, forcing Dr Harold Machira from Moyale Barracks Camp hospital to stop the fight. He referred the boxer to hospital for treatment.

“The cut was deep. Continuing with the fight would have been disastrous,” said Machira.

The two boxers were fairing equally until the fourth round with the judges scoring them 9-9, 10-10 and 9-9.

However, Mwakasope did not concede defeat. He claimed that he suffered the cut from a foul punch.

“It was not a normal punch. He hit me with his head, the good thing is that I have known him and I will ask for a rematch soon,” he said as he was being taken to hospital.

Mwamaso was over the moon, attributing his triumph to good preparations.

“I prepared well. I know that he is a good boxer, he defeated Charles Misanjo. But if he feels cheated, I am ready for a rematch,” said Mwamaso.

Sponsors of the bout, G and G Boxing Promotion, said they are ready to sponsor the rematch.

“We are always available. We promise to promote boxing in the country,” said the promoters’ spokesperson Gibson Chisale.
