Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) national governing council member Joseph Mwanamvekha on Tuesday met the party’s officials in Mzimba District who are also delegates to the DPP convention slated for 2023.

Various speakers at the meeting, including the party’s regional governor (North) Ackim Mwanza urged the delegates to vote for Mwanamvekha at the DPP convention.

“He is the only one who can unite the party and bring us back to power in 2025,” said Mwanza to the cheering delegates.

In an interview, however, Mwanamvekha refused to comment on the issue that he is planning to contest for the party’s presidency at the convention, saying he was in Mzimba to strengthen party structures.

He said: “What you have asked me about contesting as a DPP president at the convention is an internal matter. I will not comment about it now.

During the meeting, Mwanamvekha, who served as minister of Finance during the Peter Mutharika administration, took time to apologise to the district officials, saying DPP failed to develop Mzimba when it was in power.

“We failed to develop Mzimba District and we failed to support you our local leaders,” he said.

One of the delegates, Amos Mumba, who is Mzimba Solola Constituency governor, said DPP is still strong in the district and is rallying behind Mwanamvekha.
