Mwando, Makawa title bout Nov. 19

Middleweight champion Briane Mwando will defend the title against challenger Chikondi Makawa on November 19 at Robin’s Park in Blantyre.

Mwando, who retained the title after forcing Charles Misanjo into third-round retirement in July, said he is ready to defend the title again.

“I am more than ready to take it to the ring against Makawa. I have been in the gym for the past few months and I cannot wait to get back into the ring for a title defence. I will knock him out in the fourth round,” said Mwando, whose record stands at six wins—four knockouts—and seven losses.

But 25-year-old Makawa, who lost the super welterweight title to Kudakwache Banda on points in June, said he is determined to snatch the belt from Mwando.

The No Pain No Gain Promotion pugilist, who has six wins and five losses said: “I am now in good shape. I am desperate to bury the agonies of my recent losses with a big win against Mwando. It has been too long since I strapped a belt across my shoulders. I will make sure to win the bout by the eighth round.”

The event, organised by Alufandika Boxing Promotion and Zama Boxing Promotion, will also see Roy Yuda taking on Zimbabwean Eddie Phiri in the main supporting bout.

Four other supporting fights, including the one between Ruth Chisale and Lucy Phiri, will also be on the undercard.

Zama Boxing Promotion managing director Precious Matipwiri said preparations for the bouts are at advanced stage.

He said they have arranged advanced sale of tickets at Limbe Hardware Puma Filling Station, Steers and Mwando’s Gym in Blantyre. n
