Mwando’s ban lifted, to  face TZ boxer on Sept 5

The Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) has lifted boxer Brian Mwando’s indefinite ban and he is set to have his eight-round return bout on September 5 against Tanzanian Misheck Mwanyembe at Robin’s Park in Blantyre.

MPBCB spokesperson Frank Chibisa confirmed the lifting of Mwando’s ban, but said there were conditions attached.

“He has been given the green light to return to the ring, but on condition that he pays a K50 000 fine and also applies for a new licence as the initial one was revoked and once he does that, he will be free to fight. His manager Robin Alufandika also needs to apply for his licence as someone who manages boxers,” said Chibisa.

However, Alufandika yesterday said the conditions raised by MPBCB will be adhered to.

The Zimbabwean pugilist’s licence was revoked in March this year after being found guilty of causing the fracas that occurred following his bout against Charles Misanjo, which he lost. However, Mwando vehemently protested against the punishment, describing it as grossly unfair on the basis that he wasn’t heard.

Commenting on the move by MPBCB to lift his ban, Mwando, who fights under Malawi’s licence, said: “I am excited with the prospect of bouncing back into the ring and I cannot wait for my return fight against Mwanyembe.”

The 25-year-old boxer, who has a record of nine wins and four losses, said he has already stepped up preparations for the bout. His opponent, Mwanyembe, 32, is one of the top boxers in Tanzania and boasts a record of six wins and one loss.

The two will fight in super-middleweight category (75 kilogrammes). In the main supporting bout, Henry Muyaya will face John Mbenje.
