Mwanza district commissioner (DC) Michael Chimbalanga says a contingency disaster plan is crucial for the district ahead of the rainy season.

The DC said this on Friday in Blantyre at the end of a three-day workshop aimed at formulating the document.

“The document will be a guiding tool of activities to be implemented by the council and will also be marketed to seek support from both stakeholders and potential external donors,” said Chimbalanga.

He also said the plan contains issues that affect communities during disasters in sectors such as health, education, agriculture, environment and transport, among others.

The document is expected to be effective from October 2020/21 and revisited annually.

One of the participants, Kazembe Juma, who is also youth officer at Mwanza District Council, said he was pleased that issues affecting the youth during disasters were also considered.

The training attracted  government sector heads and civil society organisations from the district.

The workshop was funded by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations through Save the Children.
