An official from the DHO, Collins Noniwa expressed the concern on Tuesday during this year’s district Candle Light Memorial at Kunenekude in Senior Chief Kanduku’s area.

He said the district has from July 2017 registered 1 450 new cases.

“It is sad to note that considering all the efforts made by government to combat HIV, people are still contracting the deadly virus,” he said.

He said there is need for concerted efforts in the fight against further spread of the virus through consistent awareness.

In his remarks, councillor Godfrey Zamaheya, who was also guest of honour at the function, suggested that a joint forum comprising government sectors and civil society organisations should be introduced whereby HIV and Aids issues can be discussed to find ways of combating it.

The day was patronised by the clergy from different faith groups, traditional leaders and political party representatives.

There were also performances and blood testing was conducted to mark the day whose theme was Reflecting On Our Past Planning For Our Future.

The day is an annual event celebrated during the third week of May.
