Mwanza District Council plans to employ 17 temporary primary school teachers to reduce teacher-to-student ratio from one to 60 learners to one to 40 learners.

The development comes after schools have created many streams to decongest big classes as a measure to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Namani speaks to stakeholders

Speaking on Thursday during a stakeholders meeting, Mwanza District education manager Saulos Namani said the plan was part of their preparedness before schools reopen.

“We are implementing Ministry of Education’s directive that classes should be decongested and that has created demand for more teachers,” he said.

Namani said the teachers expected to be employed this month on temporary basis are those who qualified during Initial Primary Teacher Education (Ipte) 13th Cohort and below.

“They will be deployed to 17 schools in rural areas where they are expected to work for five months from now and will be receiving K80 000 monthly,” he said.

Mwanza District Council chairperson Kaisi Chimbalanga commended the initiative.

Mwanza has 633 teachers against the enrollment of 40 000 students in public primary schools.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Education has provided plastic buckets and chlorine to Mwanza District Council to distribute to its six education zones.
